Amtrak's Carry-On Folding-Bike Limits

Amtrak has confirmed in writing that a qualifying folding bicycle may be carried aboard under its Carry-On Bike Policy when it meets both of these limits:

Maximum Size and Weight

Maximum folded dimensions: 34 x 15 x 48 inches

Maximum weight: 50 pounds

The bicycle must be a true folding bicycle and must remain folded while being carried and stored. A conventional bicycle does not become a qualifying folding bicycle merely because a wheel or another component is removed.

Brompton A Line and C Line

Amtrak specifically confirmed that the Brompton A Line and C Line dimensions supplied to Amtrak meet the Carry-On Bike Policy. A bag or case is not required.

The Folding Bicycle Counts as Carry-On Baggage

The folded bicycle counts toward the passenger's carry-on allowance. Travelers should plan their other luggage accordingly and make sure they can control and carry everything they bring.

How This Works on the Mardi Gras Service

The Mardi Gras Service does not offer checked bicycle service. Qualifying folding bicycles are carried onboard and stored in the baggage storage areas at the ends of the coach cars.

They may not be placed in overhead baggage racks or vestibules.

Amtrak confirmed that the folding-bike policy applies at every stop along the Mardi Gras Service. Passengers on this service do not need to carry a printed copy of the policy because conductors are knowledgeable about the carry-on bike policy.

What This Confirmation Does Not Say

This confirmation does not mean that all bicycles qualify. Conventional bicycles remain subject to the bicycle service available on the specific train. A folding bicycle that exceeds the size or weight limits does not qualify under this carry-on policy.

RideTHISbike is not representing that electric folding bicycles qualify under this policy. Travelers considering an electric bicycle should obtain current guidance directly from Amtrak before booking or arriving at the station.

Measure Before You Travel

Do not rely only on a model name or the word "folding" in a product description. Check the complete folded length, width and height with the bicycle in its travel configuration. Include the pedals, handlebars, wheels and anything attached to the bicycle.

Confirm the complete weight as it will be carried. Accessories can push an otherwise qualifying bicycle beyond the limit.

Check Current Trip Information

Policies, equipment and operating conditions can change. Review Amtrak's current baggage and bicycle information when planning your trip and follow instructions from Amtrak personnel at the station and aboard the train.
