What Happens During Many Bicycle and E-Bike Crashes

There is no single typical crash. A tire may slide, a wheel may enter a hole, a rider may brake too abruptly, a car door may open, a driver may turn across the rider's path, or another road user may behave unexpectedly. A rider can also lose balance while starting, stopping or turning at low speed.

E-bikes do not create an entirely different set of human injuries, but they can let riders reach and maintain useful travel speeds with less effort. Many e-bikes are also heavier than conventional bicycles. New riders should allow time to learn how the bike accelerates, turns and stops before using higher assistance levels or riding in complicated traffic.

Impact energy rises quickly as speed increases. In practical terms, a modest reduction in speed can create more time to see a problem, more distance to react and less energy to manage if a crash still occurs.

Head, Face and Neck Injuries

Head, facial and neck injuries are often grouped together in injury datasets, but they are not the same.

Head injuries can involve the scalp, skull or brain. A properly fitted bicycle helmet is primarily intended to reduce forces reaching the head during certain impacts.

How a Bicycle Helmet Should Fit

A good helmet is one that fits your head and stays where it belongs. Helmet shapes vary, so try more than one model if a helmet creates pressure points or moves excessively.

  1. Start with the right size. Measure around the widest part of your head and use the manufacturer's size range. Adjust the pads or fit ring until the helmet feels snug without being painful.
  2. Keep it level and low. The helmet should sit level, not tipped back. The front edge should be about one or two finger-widths above the eyebrows.
  3. Set the side straps. The straps should form a V under and slightly in front of each ear.
  4. Snug the chin strap. Buckle it and tighten it so that no more than one or two fingers fit between the strap and your chin.
  5. Test the fit. Open your mouth wide. The helmet should pull down slightly. Shake your head and gently try to roll the helmet forward and backward. It should remain stable and should not expose the forehead or fall into your eyes.

Check the fit each time the helmet is worn. Hats, hairstyles, loosened straps and shared rental helmets can change the adjustment.

When to Replace a Bicycle Helmet

Replace a helmet after an impact in a crash. The liner may have absorbed energy or been damaged even when the helmet looks normal. Bicycle helmets are generally designed to manage one significant impact, not repeated crashes.

Helmet Standards and Price

A higher price can buy lower weight, better ventilation, easier adjustment, different coverage, improved aerodynamics or added technologies. Price alone, however, does not tell you whether a helmet fits your head or whether you will wear it correctly.

An inexpensive, genuine CPSC-compliant bicycle helmet that fits correctly can provide meaningful protection. A more expensive helmet worn loosely, tipped back or left at home cannot do its job.
