Travel Farther Without Depending on a Car
A bicycle can turn a train station into the starting point for a much larger adventure. Instead of flying to a destination and renting a car, some travelers can use rail for the long distance and a bicycle for local exploration.
That combination can make travel more enjoyable, more flexible and more responsible for travelers who want to reduce the environmental impact of a trip.
The details matter. A bicycle that is useful at the destination must also meet the carrier's rules, fit the available storage space and be manageable while boarding and leaving the train.

Amtrak distinguishes qualifying folding bicycles from conventional bicycles. On routes without conventional bicycle service, a folding bicycle may be the only bicycle a passenger can bring aboard.

Why a True Folding Bicycle Matters
Removing a wheel or lowering a seat does not necessarily make a bicycle a qualifying folding bicycle. Travelers should compare the bicycle's complete folded measurements and weight with the carrier's requirements before planning a trip.
A compact fold also matters away from the train. The bicycle may need to move through a station, fit in a baggage storage area or stay beside you while you wait on an open platform.
Plan the Whole Trip
Confirm the train rules.
Check the bicycle policy and any route-specific instructions before booking.
Measure the folded bicycle.
Use the bicycle's complete outside dimensions, including pedals, handlebars, wheels and attached accessories.
Know the destination.
Review the roads, riding distance, weather, daylight and return schedule before leaving the train.
Pack for self-sufficiency.
Carry the repair supplies, lock, lights, water and identification appropriate for the ride.
