What Has Changed?
- July 1, 2026: Created FAQ 5 to answer common questions about buying with a voucher, planning for the remaining balance, eligible safety and security accessories, EPIC Federal Credit Union, and Discovery Rides for voucher winners.
Quick Answer
The rebate can reduce the price of a new qualifying e-bike at purchase, but residents should still plan for the remaining balance, taxes, eligible accessories, and future service. Voucher winners should avoid rushing, especially if the redemption window is short.
How is the rebate applied at purchase?
Current program guidance describes the rebate as an instant point-of-sale discount for selected residents. In plain English, the voucher is expected to reduce the purchase price at the register on a new qualifying e-bike, rather than being mailed later as a reimbursement check.
Will the rebate cover the full cost of an e-bike?
Sometimes it may, but residents should not assume that. The rebate amount may reduce the purchase price substantially, but the buyer may still be responsible for the remaining balance, taxes, eligible accessories not covered by remaining voucher value, and future maintenance.
What costs should I plan for besides the e-bike?
Plan for the remaining balance after the voucher, sales tax if applicable, a helmet, lock, lights, cargo accessories if needed, future flat repairs, brake adjustments, and routine service. A rebate can lower the purchase price, but it does not eliminate the need to own and maintain the bike responsibly.
Can leftover voucher value be used for a helmet, lights, or lock?
Yes. Based on current guidance, remaining rebate value after the e-bike purchase may be used for eligible safety and security equipment such as a helmet, lights, and lock. Selected applicants should still follow the official voucher instructions because final redemption rules control.
Can I finance the remaining balance?
Yes, financing may be an option for residents who need help covering the remaining balance after the voucher. Financing should be considered carefully because it is still a loan obligation. Residents should understand the payment amount, term, interest rate, and total cost before agreeing.
For a deeper explanation, see the future Financing Options guide once it is published.
Why does RideTHISbike mention EPIC Federal Credit Union?
RideTHISbike mentions EPIC Federal Credit Union because it is a local credit union with a nearby office and a community-focused mission. EPIC may be a useful option for residents who need a personal loan to cover the remaining balance after a voucher, including people who may also benefit from credit-repair support.
Does RideTHISbike earn anything by referring people to EPIC Federal Credit Union?
No. RideTHISbike does not earn anything by referring residents to EPIC Federal Credit Union. We mention EPIC because we believe local residents may benefit from a community-oriented financing option. Residents must make their own financial decision and should confirm membership and loan requirements directly with EPIC.
What is a Discovery Ride?
A Discovery Ride is an extended, approximately one-hour test ride offered by RideTHISbike for a set fee. The rider is escorted by a trained technician who can answer questions about fit, handling, comfort, storage, cargo needs, maintenance, and how the e-bike fits the rider's real transportation needs.
Can a Discovery Ride fee apply toward a bike purchase?
Yes. If the customer buys that bike within 30 days of the Discovery Ride, a substantial portion of the Discovery Ride fee applies toward the cost of the bike. This makes the Discovery Ride especially useful for voucher winners who already know they are buying a bike but need confidence about which bike is right.
Should I test ride before choosing a rebate bike?
Yes, whenever possible. A short voucher window can make people feel rushed, but a rushed choice can waste the one-time benefit. Riding one or two serious options before buying can reveal differences in comfort, balance, riding position, weight, storage practicality, and confidence that are hard to understand from a specification sheet.
- Try the style of bike you are seriously considering.
- Pay attention to comfort, control, mounting and dismounting, braking, and visibility.
- Think about where the bike will be stored and how it will be locked.
- Ask what service and warranty support will look like after the sale.
- Do not choose only because a bike is available quickly or looks like the cheapest option.

Our Promise
The purpose of this Resource Center is to help New Orleanians make the best use of a finite resource: this generous, truly free instant e-bike rebate that each lottery winner can use only once.
If the time we've invested in creating this guide helps even a few people choose an e-bike that better meets their transportation needs, and continues serving them for years to come, then every hour spent building this resource will have been worthwhile long after the rebate program has become history.
We believe the City's investment succeeds when an e-bike becomes part of everyday life, replacing car trips, improving health, reducing transportation costs, and bringing more joy to getting around New Orleans.
That's why we've invested so much time building this Resource Center, and why we'll continue updating it as the program evolves.
