What Has Changed?
- July 1, 2026: Created FAQ 4 to answer common questions about choosing a qualifying e-bike, UL 2849, local service support, online-only bikes, cargo bikes, folding bikes, and avoiding a poor one-time voucher decision.
Quick Answer
A qualifying e-bike is not automatically the right e-bike. First confirm that the exact model is currently eligible under program rules. Then confirm that the bike fits your body, your trips, your storage situation, your budget, and your need for local service support.
Does every e-bike qualify for the rebate?
No. Do not assume every e-bike qualifies. Current program guidance says a qualifying e-bike must meet program requirements, including UL 2849 certification, and the voucher must be used according to official rules after a resident is selected. The safest approach is simple: confirm the exact model is currently eligible before purchase.
Why does UL 2849 certification matter?
UL 2849 is an electrical safety standard for complete e-bike electrical systems. It matters because current program guidance identifies UL 2849 certification as a requirement for qualifying e-bikes. It also helps residents look beyond price, appearance, and online claims when evaluating electrical safety.
Is UL 2271 the same as UL 2849?
No. UL 2271 applies to batteries, while UL 2849 applies to the e-bike electrical system more broadly. A bike advertised with a UL 2271 battery should not automatically be treated as UL 2849 certified. For the rebate, residents should confirm the full e-bike meets the program requirement. Learn more in RideTHISbike's plain-English UL guide.
Can I use the rebate on an online-only e-bike?
Do not assume so. Current guidance says the voucher must be used through an eligible New Orleans vendor, and eligible vendors must service and repair the e-bikes they sell. Some online-only e-bikes may be useful products, but rebate buyers should verify the seller, the bike, UL 2849 certification, and service support before assuming the voucher can be used.
Why does local service support matter?
Because an e-bike is not just a one-day purchase. Brakes wear, tires go flat, parts need adjustment, batteries and chargers need safe handling, and warranty questions may come up. A rebate bike should have a realistic path for service and repair so it can remain useful for years instead of becoming another failed product headed for the waste stream.
How do I know whether a model is currently eligible?
Check the current program list and confirm the exact model before purchase. A model that seems like a good fit, has a similar name, or appears to meet the general requirements should not be treated as eligible until it is confirmed under current program rules. The list of qualifying e-bikes may change over time.
Can cargo e-bikes qualify?
A cargo e-bike may qualify if the exact model meets current program requirements, including UL 2849 certification, and is purchased according to voucher rules through an eligible retailer. Do not assume cargo style alone makes a bike eligible or ineligible.
Can folding e-bikes qualify?
A folding e-bike may qualify if the exact model meets current program requirements, including UL 2849 certification, and is purchased according to voucher rules through an eligible retailer. Folding bikes can be especially useful for residents with limited storage, but eligibility still needs to be confirmed model by model.
What questions should I ask before choosing a rebate bike?
Ask whether the exact model is currently eligible, whether the full e-bike is UL 2849 certified, whether the retailer can redeem the voucher, whether the bike can be serviced locally, what your out-of-pocket cost will be, and whether the bike fits your actual trips, storage, comfort, cargo needs, and riding confidence.
- Is this exact model currently on the qualifying e-bike list?
- Is the full e-bike system certified to UL 2849?
- Can this retailer redeem the New Orleans rebate voucher?
- Will this retailer service and repair this e-bike after the sale?
- What is my estimated out-of-pocket cost after the voucher?
- Does this bike fit my real trips, storage, security, and comfort needs?
Should I choose the cheapest qualifying e-bike?
Not automatically. Price matters, but the cheapest qualifying bike is not always the best value. A poor fit can waste the benefit of the voucher because winners do not get a second chance at the rebate. The better question is: which qualifying e-bike will you actually use for years?

Our Promise
The purpose of this Resource Center is to help New Orleanians make the best use of a finite resource: this generous, truly free instant e-bike rebate that each lottery winner can use only once.
If the time we've invested in creating this guide helps even a few people choose an e-bike that better meets their transportation needs, and continues serving them for years to come, then every hour spent building this resource will have been worthwhile long after the rebate program has become history.
We believe the City's investment succeeds when an e-bike becomes part of everyday life, replacing car trips, improving health, reducing transportation costs, and bringing more joy to getting around New Orleans.
That's why we've invested so much time building this Resource Center, and why we'll continue updating it as the program evolves.
