Take Your Folding Bike On BART
Did you know that folding bikes can be brought aboard BART trains?
Bay Area Rapid Transit District (BART) is a public rapid-transit system that serves parts of the San Francisco Bay Area, including the cities of San Francisco, Oakland, Berkeley, Daly City, Richmond, Fremont, Hayward, Walnut Creek, and Concord. It also serves San Francisco International Airport and, via AirBART buses, Oakland International Airport and connects with other mass transit services such as Caltrain.
Bringing bikes aboard BART is so popular that BART has strict policies about full size bikes that they will allow aboard. Cyclists have even been turned away by conductors due to rush hour crowding and other issues. Happily though, folders are allowed on the trains and are not subject to the limitation of full size bikes.
Following is a quote from the BART website on this subject.
Folded bikes are allowed on the trains at all times. During commute times, folding bikes must be folded before entering the paid area at the Embarcadero, Montgomery, Powell and Civic Center San Francisco stations, and the 12th and 19th Street Oakland stations. At all other stations, they may be folded on the platform, but must be folded before boarding a train.
