What Has Changed?

  • July 1, 2026: Created FAQ 1: Before You Apply as the first focused FAQ section linked from the main FAQ hub. This page keeps basic eligibility questions together and links to deeper Resource Center guides instead of duplicating them.
  • July 1, 2026: Added stronger guidance that selected applicants should not wait until voucher approval to begin choosing the right e-bike. Because the voucher use window may be comparatively brief, residents should prepare before selection so they do not rush into a poor fit.

Quick Answer

Current City guidance says the New Orleans e-bike rebate is for New Orleans residents age 18 or older, with one rebate per eligible resident and proof of residency required. Income-qualified residents may qualify for the larger rebate amount.

That does not mean every applicant receives a voucher. Current guidance says rebates are distributed through a random selection process, and prior purchases do not qualify.

Selected applicants should also be ready to choose carefully once approved. The voucher use window is expected to be comparatively brief, so the waiting period before selection is the right time to learn what kind of e-bike fits your routes, body, storage, budget, and service needs.

Plain-English Summary Before applying, confirm that you live in New Orleans, are at least 18, can document residency, and understand that applying does not guarantee selection. Also begin learning which kind of qualifying e-bike would truly fit your life, because a rushed choice after approval can waste a one-time opportunity.

What is the New Orleans E-Bike Incentive Program?

The City of New Orleans E-Bike Incentive Program is a point-of-sale rebate program intended to help eligible New Orleans residents purchase qualifying new e-bikes.

In plain English, selected applicants are expected to use a voucher toward a new qualifying e-bike at the time of purchase. It is not a tax credit, not a mail-in rebate, and not a reimbursement after buying early.

For the larger overview, start with the New Orleans E-Bike Rebate Resource Center homepage.

Who can apply for the New Orleans e-bike rebate?

Current City guidance says New Orleans residents age 18 or older may be eligible to receive one e-bike rebate and must provide proof of residency.

That is the basic eligibility layer. Final approval depends on the official application process, required documentation, and random selection.

For a fuller explanation, read Eligibility.

Do I have to live in New Orleans to apply?

Yes. Current City guidance describes the program as being for New Orleans residents.

Someone living nearby, including in Jefferson Parish, St. Bernard Parish, St. Tammany Parish, or another surrounding area, should not assume they qualify unless official guidance says otherwise.

Common Mistake Do not treat “Greater New Orleans” or “near New Orleans” as the same thing as living in the City of New Orleans for this program.

Is there an age requirement?

Yes. Current City guidance says residents must be age 18 or older to receive an e-bike rebate.

If a parent or guardian is thinking about an e-bike for a younger rider, the adult should wait for official application instructions before assuming how that situation will be handled.

How much is the rebate?

Current City guidance states that income-qualified residents may receive a $1,200 rebate and other eligible residents may receive a $600 rebate.

The rebate lowers the purchase price, but it may not cover the full cost of a quality e-bike. Buyers should also plan for any remaining balance, taxes, and practical safety or security equipment.

For payment-related questions, see FAQ 5: Buying and Paying for Your E-Bike.

Who may qualify for the larger income-qualified rebate?

Current City guidance says income-qualified residents may be verified by documentation such as enrollment in SNAP or Medicaid, or other income documentation.

The final accepted documents belong to the City or program administrator. Do not assume a specific document will be accepted unless the official application instructions say so.

For more detail, read Documents You May Need.

Can more than one person in the same household apply?

Current guidance around household scenarios is not firm enough to treat as settled.

The City has stated one rebate per eligible resident, but detailed household scenarios have been subject to changing interpretation. Do not assume how multiple-adult household applications will be handled until official application instructions explain the rule clearly.

Accuracy First This is exactly the kind of question that should not be answered by guessing. This page will be updated when official guidance is clear.

Does applying mean I will receive a rebate?

No. Eligibility allows a resident to apply, but current City guidance says rebates will be distributed through a random selection process.

Applying is not the same as receiving a voucher. A resident should not buy an e-bike or make a non-refundable decision based only on having submitted an application.

For the selection process, read Lottery and Application Windows.

Can I buy an e-bike now and get reimbursed later?

No. Current City guidance says rebates may not be applied to prior purchases.

To receive the rebate, applicants must use the voucher provided after selection through the random selection process on a new qualifying purchase.

Costly Mistake to Avoid Do not buy an e-bike now and assume the rebate can be applied later. Current guidance says prior purchases do not qualify.

What should I do before the application window opens?

Use the waiting period to prepare instead of rushing into a purchase.

Once an applicant is approved, the window for using a voucher is expected to be comparatively brief. That is not the best time to start from zero, test random bikes, or make a rushed decision. Because residents should not expect a second chance at a voucher, the goal is to be ready to choose a qualifying e-bike that truly fits their needs and can remain useful for years.

  • Review Eligibility.
  • Gather proof of New Orleans residency.
  • Gather income-qualification documents if they may apply.
  • Do not buy an e-bike before receiving a voucher.
  • Learn what makes an e-bike eligible by reading Qualifying E-Bikes.
  • Think through your real trips, storage, budget, comfort, security, and service needs.
  • Consider test riding before selection so you are not forced to choose in a hurry after approval.
Why This Matters A voucher can reduce the purchase price, but it cannot make the wrong bike right. A bike that does not fit the rider, route, storage situation, or service needs may sit unused, which works against the purpose of the program.

For application timing, read Lottery and Application Windows. For bike selection, read Qualifying E-Bikes.

Our Promise

The purpose of this Resource Center is to help New Orleanians make the best use of a finite resource: this generous, truly free instant e-bike rebate that each lottery winner can use only once.

If the time we've invested in creating this guide helps even a few people choose an e-bike that better meets their transportation needs, and continues serving them for years to come, then every hour spent building this resource will have been worthwhile long after the rebate program has become history.

We believe the City's investment succeeds when an e-bike becomes part of everyday life, replacing car trips, improving health, reducing transportation costs, and bringing more joy to getting around New Orleans.

That's why we've invested so much time building this Resource Center, and why we'll continue updating it as the program evolves.
